Grand Valley Institution for Women is in a women's federal prison in Kitchener, Ontario,[1] served by the Government of Canada.
In Canada, women sentenced to prison terms of greater than two years serve their time in a federal institution operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. In Ontario, there is one penitentiary which can house about 75 women and one community correctional centre (CCC).[2]
The Kingston Penitentiary, the only penitentiary style prison for women, has since closed. Grand Valley Institute for Women is now the only federal women's prison in Ontario.
On October 19, 2007, 19 year old inmate Ashley Smith hung herself at the Grand Valley Institution.[3]
